Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to contact my General Practitioner?

Not unless you wish to. Your Chiropractor will send a report to your General Practitioner (with your permission) informing your GP of your problem and the treatment that has been given. This will also include a consultant radiologist report on any x rays taken; a copy will also be given to you. Obviously you do not have to visit your GP for an 'Off Work Certificate' as your Chiropractor can give you one. GPs are recommended by their Royal College that manipulation is the best form of treatment for the vast majority of mechanical back problems.

What treatment do Chiropractors give?

Chiropractors mainly use manipulation, which improves the movement and function of the spine and the joints. They may also use acupuncture, or dry needling (using sterile disposable needles), which are used to block out pain and for muscle relaxation. This is felt to be more effective, and the response lasts longer than using massage.

Does chiropractic manipulation hurt?

No, chiropractic treatment is usually painless, unless the condition is acute or inflamed, in which case treatment can normally be modified to your own particular problem. If an area is inflamed, it may be temporarily uncomfortable for a period of 12 - 36 hours after treatment. This is perfectly normal and patients should not be alarmed.

To reduce the pain try a cold pack, a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel for 10 - 15 minutes every hour, or buy a special cold pack from the reception desk.

Some patients use anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen for a 2-day course, as indicated on the instructions. Do not take these tablets if you have an ulcer, indigestion or are asthmatic - if you are concerned ask your General Practitioner.

If you feel the problem has increased after treatment, stop what you are doing, apply some ice and telephone your chiropractor for advice. Do not worry, as this is likely to be only temporary reaction.

How many appointments will I need?

There are no set numbers as this will depend on your problem. An average number is about 12-24 spread over 2-3 months. If the problem has a history of reoccurring or is a degenerative condition a regular maintenance appointment would be a very good idea.
